Natural oil is the best choice. We tested several surface treatment materials, and considering the results and the value for money, linseed oil was the absolute winner.
Raw linseed oil is one of the most common natural surface treatment agents. The cheapest natural oil for the treatment of wooden surfaces, which is popularly used as a primer, as it is absorbed into the pores of the wood and saturates the upper fibers. So it performs a penetrating and pore-sealing function.
After its use, the absorption capacity of the wood surface is greatly reduced or, in the case of complete saturation, ceases.
Linseed oil is extracted from the seeds of flax. Among natural oils, it can be classified as a drying oil, which dries by itself in the air by absorbing oxygen. Linseed oil is also an essential component of surface treatment oils made from natural materials.
However, the drying time of linseed oil itself is quite long. Thus, for the treatment of the surface of the wood, not raw linseed oil, but linseed oil ointment is usually used.
The linseed oil is mixed with so-called siccatives (drying agents), the drying agents accelerate the absorption of oxygen, so it becomes a mixture that dries faster.
This mixture is called linseed oil ointment or also known as linseed oil varnish.
